Sardines: Hide-and-Go-Seek Unchained

Looking for a simple game for your next sleepover, family getaway, or Halloween party?

This one is so simple and SO FUN! It’s basically just a reverse version of HIde-and-Go-Seek. One person hides and the rest of the group does the seeking.

A few tips:

  • This is more exhilarating in the evening with most of the lights turned down or out. You will want flashlights or to have lighting here and there to avoid anyone falling down or running into things (with my crew — this is a necessity!)

  • We love this game when we rent an Airbnb with friends or family since there are so many hiding spots to discover. Big bonus if there’s a creepy basement or cellar!

The Quick Rundown (or Stack-up):

  1. The group gathers in a central place (porch, bathroom, closet) and one person hides. We usually Rock. Paper, Scissors for the hider. The group counts down together loudly to 50 or whatever number is agreed. When finished, the group yells, “Ready or not, here we come!”

  2. The group divides up and starts searching for the hider. The more spread out you can be the better (I’ll explain later).

  3. When a seeker finds the hider, they hide with them. It’s the most fun if they are VERY QUIET about it. They may even want to pass the hider up and come back to them later if there are others in the room (up to you). As more people find the hiders, they join in the hiding within the same spot. This gets really out of hand depending on how small the hiding place is!

  4. The game ends when the last poor lonely soul discovers the entire rest of their group piled up behind a couch or in a bathtub. When we play this, it usually ends with a weirdo-avalanche of some shot and occasionally someone in the group will pee their pants.

(Back to 2) It’s a very strange and ominous feeling as a seeker (especially in a strange dark house) when your fellow seekers start suddenly dissapearing one-by-one and you find yourself ALL ALONE!

Happy unchaining! - Janet
